Expanding Exports, A Cornerstone for Developing Afghanistan's Economy

The First Afghanistan National Export Conference held at the Inter-Continental Hotel in Kabul on the 31st of August 2008 concluded with the promise of action and change.
The objectives of this conference were to: conduct a general evaluation of the difficulties facing the Afghan Export Sector, to voice these difficulties and challenges that national exporters face before figures of authority and responsibility in the government and to further move the Afghan Exports as a key priority in the Afghanistan National Development Strategy. Attending the Conference where respective Ministers, Deputy Ministers, heads of national and international agencies involved in the development of the Afghan Economy as well as over 600 national Exporters and traders.
The conference comprised of two dialogues that provided both government officials and representatives from the private sector to heed the complaints and concerns of ordinary Afghan Exporters and also to voice their own remarks on the matters discussed.
The respective authorities promised that government ministries and agencies would work more closely with each other in a stronger partnership to attain their mutual goal of promoting the Afghan Export Sector.
The 600 businesspeople that attended the conference represented 5 major branches of the export sector, which are: Carpets, Fresh Fruits, Dry Fruits, Marble and Gem Stones, Handicrafts and Animal Products.
At the end of the conference, the representatives of the government, the export sector and attending donor agreed to jointly work to solve the challenges faced.
The First Afghanistan National Export Conference was organized by the Export Promotion Agency of Afghanistan, with the financial and technical assistance of BMZ and GTZ
