05, 005, 2009/The Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI), in a press conference on Wednesday at Government Media and Information Center (GMIC), reported on remarkable increase of export of Afghan products. Speaking to various media channels, Minister of Commerce & Industry, Waheedullah Shahrani said, “Afghanistan’s export has increased to US$ 547.5 Million in solar year1387 (2008) from US$ 454 million in 1386 (2007), showing an increase of 21 percent according to the figures released by the Afghanistan’s Central Statistics Office.
Afghanistan’s major export products are carpet, dried and fresh fruits, medical herbs, gemstones and marbles that are exported to international markets in India, China, Pakistan, UK, UAE, USA and the EU. Afghanistan is gradually restoring its market share for medical herbs and dried fruits and nuts in some of the mentioned markets. However, the market for carpet is not very promising due to the current global economic crisis.
In addition to marketing efforts, factors such as simplification of export procedures and enhancement of the relation between the government and business community to ensure that the difficulties facing the private sector are dealt with by the government in order to find a proper solutions for them, have also contributed to the increase in the export of Afghan products.
